The Daily Express newspaper reports that a statement from the US Department of Defence believes that: “Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, has termed the killing an act of US terrorism and said that the “US bears responsibility for all the consequences of its rogue adventurism.”
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have also threatened violent retaliation against the United States in response to Soleimani's death raising fears that this strike is likely to lead to further destabilisation of the region, with a proxy war likely to erupt.
Soleimani headed the Quds Force which is a special division of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards that is tasked with carrying out unconventional warfare and intelligence activities abroad.

The Major-General had been a constant thorn in the side of the US and its Middle Eastern allies, Israel and Saudia Arabia, helping to spread Iranian influence across the region.
He played a major role in defeating ISIS in Syria, as well as propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad regime during the civil war, which started in 2011.

US President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the recent attack of the US Embassy in Iraq and warned the Iranian regime that it “will pay a very big price” for its actions, saying “this is not a warning, it is a threat.”
He said: ““Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will.
“They will be held fully responsible.”

In the meantime, the U.S. embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens to depart Iraq immediately.
