President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead the championing of the African Union culture and the arts agenda. This is after he accepted the invitation by Mali President Boubacar Keita, who was recently elected to lead the continent's culture and the arts initiative.

The message inviting President Kenyatta for the continental role was delivered at State House, Mombasa, by a special envoy of President Boubacar Keïta, Prof Alioune Sall.

Receiving the special message, President Kenyatta said that culture and the arts are key ingredients in promoting unity of the Africa continent. "The rich African culture and the arts could be harnessed as a vehicle to inculcate a positive attitude, instill patriotism as well as create employment for the youth throughout the continent."

President Kenyatta will be installed formally as the African Union Champion for culture and the arts in a ceremony to be held in Ethiopia in February
