Meet the family from Migori County in Kenya who moved to the capital city and started a business that has now become a household name in town - Big Fish, serving you fish with ugali.

Who is Osumo brad?

My name is Osumo Bradox, a 26 year old graduate in Biochemistry from Kenyatta University. I was born and raised in a family of 10; six sisters and a brother. I hail from Migori county and I'm a fish vendor.

Story behind 'Big Fish'

After graduating from university in 2016, I was up and down looking for a job. Nothing was coming forth. I remember knocking on so many doors for two years. All I got were regrets. I felt dejected.

My older sister, a trained teacher ran a fish selling business  as a side hustle operating from a makeshift structure in our neighborhood. She operated the business during weekends and on holidays. In 2018, I and another of my sister joined her in the fish business.

It took some time before the business could stand on its own. We however, took up the challenges and crafted ways of attracting more clients.

Months later, the business was booming and we had a lot of clients teeming in. We moved from the makeshift structure and rented a permanent and bigger structure and named our business 'Big fish'. The name was born from my elder sister's dream of selling big fish. We sell, supply and do fish deliveries.

Overcoming 'big fish' competition

Our major challenge was overcoming established fish brands such as Ranalo Foods popularly known as K'Osewe and Mama Oliech. Advertising our business on digital platforms has really helped in promoting and creating visibility for our brand. Our digital followers are the second biggest clients who patronise our business. Big Fish has a following of about 3900 followers on twitter.

Our key focus is ensuring that our clients get the best service. We offer the best customer care services, packaging, delivery and ensure cleanliness in our premises and our food. Currently, we do swift deliveries with the help of motorbikes and digital food delivery applications.

We are working on been signed on Jumia an online shopping mall and Uber Eats a food delivery mobile application which we hope will spur our sales. We live by our motto, true taste ever fresh.

Where do you source your fish from?

I get the fish from Lake Victoria and from fishermen in Muhuru Bay, Migori county.

Where are you situated?

We are located  at Garden City Estate  behind Mountain mall, along Thika Super highway.

We have created job opportunities for 3 young people and we are doing brisk business.

What is your fear in running this business?

Most of my clients are online and I shake at the thought of waking up one morning and find a bad review from a customer.  My business is still young and I would never want to compromise on quality. I strive to ensure that customers get the best service.

What are your fish prices?

The price of fish, deep fried or fresh, depends on its size and type. For supplies, a kilogram of Nileperch costs between Ksh 350 while deep fried fish costs between Ksh 300 and Ksh 600 depending on the size.

Osumo encourages everyone who has suffered a major setback in their life not to throw in the towel. “Throw yourself into the pool and you’ll come out on top,” he says.
