Pregnant teenage girl defiled and hanged in police cells

A 17-year-old pregnant girl has died in police cells after been defiled.

Shukran Masha who was about seven months pregnant was found hanging from a window at the Bamba police station in Kilifi County. Her parents say that Masha had begged them to allow her deliver her baby and get married first before resuming school. For fear of been arrested by the chief following the 100 percent transition order by the government, the parents had opted to go to the police station to seek advice on the same.

It's while at the police station that the police officer on duty locked her up.

“My wife wanted the police to give her a note to allow her to stay home until she gives birth. But at around midnight, I was called by my other daughter telling me that my last born had committed suicide. I'm yet to see her body,” said Masha Kazungu, the father.

The father added that he was told that his daughter used her hijab to hang herself.

The girl who scored 220 marks in the 2019 National primary examinations was set to join Kajembe Secondary school in Kilifi county after delivering her baby.

Family and friends suspect that Masha was sexually assaulted and later hanged while in the cells. Her body is lying at the Kilifi County Hospital Referral mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

The family is now demanding for an explanation from the police on what happened to their daughter in the police cells.
