President Uhuru Kenyatta has paid glowing tribute to the late former President Daniel Moi describing him as a pillar and an icon in the world whose deeds are worth emulating.

"We commence the final journey of a son of Kenya. A father of our nation and a champion of pan africanism. The question we should ask is how does one mourn an iconic leader who spent his entire life serving our nation?  He's a man who has achieved much more and is expected to be celebrated," Said Kenyatta.

"How can we celebrate the life of a man who assured the nation of peace and calm during and after his transition? The sun has set on a truly impeccable man. One who served the nation with dignity and honor. A decisive and courageous Commander-in -Chief who put his country first. A balanced leader who during clamour of multipartysm chose well to set stage for natural rebirth through introduction of multiparty.  In 2002 when his party lost the presidential election, he left office with a gracious heart to those who thereafter took up the responsibilities he had borne for  quarter of a century. He calmed fears and raised hopes of everyone. No part of Kenya was strange to him. He remained committed and ready to defend Africa and her people. Our nation is not alone in mourning him. The whole of Africa is mourning with us. We continue to receive messages of sympathy from around the world. He was my mentor," added the President.

"He was a mortal man whose works and legacy will remain immortal. May Mzee Moi's memory live as long as our Republic and may we prove ourselves worthy of this request."
