Matiang'i receives report of the Boda Boda Task Force

Interior and National Coordination  Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has today received the report of the Boda Boda Task Force detailing challenges facing the subsector.

The government  formed a 13-member taskforce to spearhead reforms in the boda boda sector which  the CS termed as rogue and disorderly.

"Our next step is to hold a National Consultative Forum to work out practical solutions with a view to protecting thousands of Kenyans to whom the industry is a source of livelihood, said Matiang'i.

The team was supposed to oversee implementation of the recommendations on policy, legal and administrative reforms, regarding public motorcycle transport. It was also to compile comprehensive data regarding safety, reliability, cost and other issues raised by consumers.

If implemented, the new rules will ensure every operator has a safety kit, which will include a helmet, reflector and heavy jacket. The government plans to make it mandatory for all motorcycle dealers to sell the kit together with the cycles. The operators will also be required to register in Saccos and will be required to pay for National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The National Transport Safety Authority will be required to digitally register the riders and issue them with a chip that will identify them.
