The Council of Governors held its annual executive elections on 20th January,  2020. The elections were held through consensus where the Governors extended the  mandate of the current executive for a second term

However, it has emerged that no woman Governor was elected to the team despite there been 2 of them namely Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru and her Kitui counterpart Charity Ngilu.

At the helm of the leadership is Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya deputised by Mwangi Wa Iria of Murang'a county. Kivutha Kibwana of Makueni maintained his Chief Whip post. The 11 committees are all headed by male governors.

Kenyans on twitter have expressed their displeasure over how the elections were conducted without considering gender balance.

@ochity wrote, "Illegal, someone can go to court no woman in the list."
@bm_bashir "It's a mens leadership things... how about the two lady governors?"
@TuJadili "No woman at all. Wow."
@mtema16 "Nonsense."
@WanjiruNjugi "World of men (the remaining two women governors should  be given atleast one seat."
@Asamoh_  "No woman?"

The Constitution of Kenya 2010 in Article 27(8) of the Bill of Rights provides that: "The State shall take legislative and other measures to implement the principle that not more than two thirds of the members of elective or appointive bodies shall be of the same gender." This provision is also reinforced in Article 81(b).
