President Kenyatta spells tough measures in fighting terrorism


President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that his administration has put in measures meant to curb terrorism in the country.

The President has spelt out more action to be undertaken by security organs in fighting terror and said that security officers will respond robustly to recruiters,sponsors and collaborators of terrorist activities. "I have directed security officers to mount operations to flush out terror operatives in North Eastern and Coast regions. All security organs and agencies must drive the implementation of the county action plans to prevent and counter violent extremism," he said.

President Kenyatta noted that the national government administrative officers and the police must engage with local politicians,  religious leaders and civil society as a proactive strategy to deny radicalisation of the youth and ensure that local violent recruiters are denied any space to operate.

He added that security agencies must cut on all economic activities that fund the Al-Shabab operations. "Smuggling and contraband goods from neighbouring countries directly fund the Al-Shabab activities. They use the money to sustain their operations. Sponsors of terrorism must be dealt with by been listed nationally and internationally to help curb their framework in East Africa."

The President said that security officers must undergo continuous training to strengthen their skills and resolve in fighting terrorism.
He was speaking at the closure of the 3 day Annual National Security Planning and Review forum in Mombasa.
