Nyeri County old firetruck

An image of an old rickety truck turned fire engine belonging to Nyeri County has surfaced online eliciting mixed reactions from Kenyans.

The picture was first posted online by Boniface Mwangi drawing wrath and ridicule from Kenyans who wondered why and how a County Government could procure such an outdated firetruck and its  ability to respond to an emergency.

A closer look at the truck shows that it does not have the basics of a fire engine. No supply of water with which to fight the fire, no carrying tools, equipment, and hoses needed by firefighters.

This is not the first time the County has raised eyebrows on the quality of fire engines it has procured. In 2015, a fire engine belonging to the county killed two mourners and injured at least 10 others as it responded to an emergency.

It is still the same truck that had to be operated by boda boda riders after its crew were unable to use it during an inferno.

A few years ago,Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, launched 2 modern fire engines from Austria costing Sh 100 million and said that the 2 bring to 4 the number of working engines in the county which would help mitigate against frequent and sporadic fires that are encountered often. One can only wonder whether this particular truck is among the 4 the Governor was talking about.
