DCI disbands the Flying Squad Unit

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has today disbanded all the Flying Squad Sub-units within the Country, only remaining with the Headquarters Unit in Nairobi.

Announcing the changes which came as a surprise to many Kenyans, the DCI warned that no officer will present himself or herself to the public as a Flying Squad officer. Equally, the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) has been scaled down to a smaller unit only based at the Headquarters in Nairobi.

The SCPU has been renamed Special Service Unit (SSU). Officers deployed in the unit have undergone intense training in and outside the country leading to upgrading of their competencies, enhanced skills & knowledge aimed at making the Unit more effective and efficient while maximising on the available resources, said the DCI.

The DCI has also announced the formation of a new outfit known as “STING SQUAD HEADQUARTERS” (SSH)  which now replaces the Flying Squad. The SSH will have a maximum of 50 specialized trained officers who will handle armed robberies, kidnappings, motor vehicle theft, sale and distribution of contraband and substandard goods.

DCI says that the units will work closely with other State Security Agencies for information and intelligence sharing.
