Meet, Asha Mohammed, the New Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General

Asha Mohammed has taken up the helm as Kenya Red Cross's new Sec-Gen following the exit of it’s long serving Sec-Gen Abbas Gullet who has steered the humanitarian for years.

Dr Asha Mohammed has been deputising Gullet since July 2018 prior to her appointment. “It is a great honor to have been selected to take over the role of secretary general of the Kenya Red Cross. I have been privileged to have worked closely with Abbas Gullet and shared in the vision he had for the organization and one we have worked with,” she stated following her appointment.

Dr. Asha who grew up in Kibra and comes from the Nubian community, credits her father who worked hard and supported her education to become the woman she is today. “ He gave me the best education he could afford at the time, risking the preying eyes from people who wondered why he cared to educate a girl. His support, fired me up to actively mentor young girls and women in my community," she says.

“As women we should count ourselves privileged that we can play multiple roles in all spheres of life. You can be a career woman, a professional, a leader, a mother and a wife. We can be anything. It’s about accepting that this is what we are. We can do it all, it can be a bit difficult to balance, especially when trying to climb up in our career ladder. But no side has to suffer. Take each role and do it at your best.”

Just a fortnight ago, Asha was awarded the Community Distinction Award during the East African Nubian Awards  ceremony for her excellent and passionate service to the community.

She holds Bachelor's degree in Dental Surgery and a Master's degree in Public Health from The University of Nairobi.
She has worked with the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement within Kenya and outside the country holding different leadership roles. She has also worked as the Head of Operations at IFRC’s Africa Zone office in Johannesburg, Head of Eastern Africa zone office in Nairobi and Movement Partnerships Advisor at ICRC.
Kenyans have sent their congratulatory messages to the incoming Sec-Gen of the humanitarian organisation.
